A Fired Up Days of Our Lives’ Suzanne Rogers Lets Loose: ‘We Have to Put Up With Enough as Women’

You know that old saying, “It’s all over but the crying?” Well, now that Days of Our Lives’ Greek baddie Konstantin is finally dead and gone, we’re hoping it’s all over along with the crying! Steve’s got to pull through and John shake this Pawn conditioning. And Maggie’s been through more than enough that she never should have been subjected to.

When Suzanne Rogers talked to Soap Opera Digest about the whole experience, she acknowledged that the risk of Maggie looking dumb and manipulated was very much on her mind. She was careful with her choices onscreen, she explained, and it sounds like she pushed back a bit at her character’s naivete.

“I said, ‘Look, this character is not stupid,’” she explained. “‘She ran two restaurants, and Victor made her the CEO of Titan before Alex. She is not a stupid woman.’”

The answer she got back, though, was less than satisfying. “And then I was told, ‘Well, when they’re in grief, women do stupid things.’ I said, ‘No, they don’t. If anything, she is more alert than before, because she has to be. She’s now the head of this family.’”

There wasn’t a whole lot she could do about how Maggie was being written, but she tried her best to play that alertness, letting Konstantin in, but still keeping him at arm’s length. A potential friend, but not a romance, no matter how hard he pushed. So it may have taken awhile, and there may have been red flags she ignored, but Maggie, she says was never all in on Konstantin.

Maybe that’s why she was so ready to turn the tables on him and make him pay the moment she realized the truth. Because in the end, Maggie was the one to come up with the plan to trap Konstantin and take him down. She was the one who delighted in telling him his con was over and even when he sneered that he killed Victor, Maggie minced no words in telling him that a “small and insignificant man” like Konstantin could never take down her beloved Victor.

And that assertiveness in putting an end to Konstantin was exactly what Rogers wanted to see.

“Oh my God,” she exclaimed to Digest. “I was so glad because I wanted her not to be the victim. We have to put up with enough as women, and I thought, ‘She cannot be the victim. She has gone through and done so many things. She’s been married to two brilliant men. She wouldn’t be stupid and let this guy [deceive her].’ So, adios.”

Adios, indeed. Goodbye and good riddance to the man who brought nothing but trouble and heartache to Maggie and the Kiriakis family. We’ve got a feeling, though, that we’ll be dealing with Konstantin’s extended stay in Salem for some time now — and we don’t just mean because of what he and Theresa did to Victor’s will.

But while we can understand that this could seriously hurt Maggie for some time to come, let’s hope this doesn’t tear her down and she bounces back to strong, confident and self-assured. Because when all is said and done, we can’t think of anyone better to take the reigns of Titan with Xander once he finally learns he isn’t just Maggie’s son-in-law, but her stepson as well!

As Rogers put it, “I just don’t want Maggie to become weak and in a rocking chair and not doing anything.” And that’s something we can all agree on.
